I am bewildered as to why the Australian Rugby League Commission would decide to withdraw support for the Western Clydesdales.
Grassroots sport is critical to the success of any serious, national sporting code and the geographic area covered by the Western Clydesdales, stretching well beyond Toowoomba, has provided many league legends over the years.
Country rugby league has been crucial in the development of many current and former stars, which is good for the game and community sport.
Without parents and kids choosing rugby league, the entirety of the game will hurt, and it will close opportunity for participation in sport. Rugby league risk losing big talent into the future.
When young fans turn up to local Hostplus Cup games, see or read about a local Clydesdale making it to the big league, it promotes the entire game. It gives them something to aspire to, beyond participation.
The games managing bodies should be supporting grassroots clubs, including the Western Clydesdales.
It was a welcome return of the Clydesdales to the Queensland competition and a unifying moment for the Southwest region.
Queensland country rugby league is genuine, it’s the best of the game, the passion. That is on full display come State of Origin.
I welcome the comments of my Federal Parliamentary colleague, and Clydesdales Patron Mr Littleproud and will work with him in support of the Western Clydesdales.
Let’s keep rugby league local, and strong in the regions.
Ends.
Famous rugby league players from across the region include:
Arthur Beetson (Roma)
Dale Shearer (St George)
Kurt Capewell (Charleville)
Brent Tate (Roma)
Matt Sing (Winton)
Steve Price (Dalby)
