An independent review into proposed Olympic infrastructure has recommended that the upgrade of Toowoomba Sports Ground (Clive Berghofer Stadium) be dumped, saying it fails to offer legacy benefit.
Federal Member for Groom, Garth Hamilton said the outcome represents the lacklustre approach taken to Olympic investment in the region.
“This process has been marred by a total lack of consultation with residents, a lack of detail and a failure to communicate.
“Through the review, it was found that this proposal was poorly thought through and offered limited legacy and benefits to the community.
“This is the right decision for local residents, community groups and businesses around the proposed site, all of whom raised their concerns and frustrations with me directly,” Mr Hamilton said.
The report recommended the State Government, Toowoomba Regional Council and organising committee explore other opportunities to host events in Toowoomba to better align with community need and legacy.
“The report has called for alternatives, and this is an opportunity for the Toowoomba region to get investment in our city right, not easy quick fixes,” Mr Hamilton said.
“We need to ensure alternative investment opportunities are put forward, if we’re spending millions then we should be doing so on projects that have merit and offer a clear vision for legacy,” Mr Hamilton said.
