The Albanese Labor Government and Minister for Home Affairs has failed to answer parliamentary questions in relation to assurances for the safety of the Toowoomba region.
Federal Member for Groom, Garth Hamilton asked the Minister for Home Affairs in November 2023 if people released from immigration detention, including those who have failed the character test and have serious criminal convictions were in the electorate of Groom.
“It is extremely disappointing that almost four months has passed, and the Minister has not responded to these serious questions.
“This entire saga is a sad, sorry mess. Labor is clearly not taking border security seriously.
“I asked a number of very basic questions as it related to community safety in Groom.
The Questions in Writing are available on the Parliament of Australia1 website and include:
1. How many people have been released from detention because of this ruling.
2. How many, if any, have been released into my community, the electoral division of Groom.
3. If any of these dangerous criminals have been released into the electoral division of Groom, what measures have been put in place at the local level to protect community safety.
Mr Hamilton said Australians have been sadly reminded they can’t trust Labor when it comes to national security. They can’t trust Labor to keep them safe.
“We need Labor to promise to provide weekly updates on the number of criminals being released from immigration detention, and tell us when crimes are committed,” Mr Hamilton said.
According to Standing Order 105(b), the response to the Question in Writing is overdue.
