Australian households are burdened with another year of unaffordable energy costs as the new financial year’s electricity prices start applying from this week.
The new prices confirm that Labor has broken its key election promise to reduce household power bills by $275, with Australians instead paying among the most expensive power bills in the world.
Federal Member for Groom, Garth Hamilton said that Labor’s energy policies were a plan for higher prices that are hurting households and businesses.
“Families across the country are struggling to pay their energy bills because of Labor’s renewables-only energy policy.
“Here in Groom, households and businesses are struggling with skyrocketing energy costs as a result of the alarming energy policies of this Labor Government.
“Prices are up and families are being forced onto hardship arrangements just to keep the lights on and their homes warm this winter,” Mr Hamilton said.
The new prices announced by the Australian Energy Regulator (AER) for the 2024-25 financial year reveal that residents in QLD, will pay up to $948 (39%) more than Labor promised.
Soaring power prices have already wreaked havoc on household budgets, with 127,000 households now on hardship arrangements with their electricity retailer.
“Labor’s band-aid solution to applying energy rebates are about the coming election, not addressing cost of living.
“New energy prices that begin to take effect this week reveal that members of our community will be up to $948 worse off than Labor promised them,” Mr Hamilton said.
