We need to get our country Back on Track and restore the Australian dream of home ownership.
The Coalition’s new Housing Infrastructure Programme (HIP) has one objective: get more homes built, sooner.
After extensive consultations with local councils across the country, a lack of funding for critical enabling infrastructure such as water, sewerage, and roads has been identified as a barrier to more homes.
Federal Member for Groom, Garth Hamilton, highlighted how critical this policy was to address the housing needs of Australia and enable more people to buy their home.
“The housing crisis we are seeing under this Labor Government is extraordinary. Labor’s failed to meet every housing target it has set for itself, leaving Australians struggling to secure their future,” Mr Hamilton said.
Shadow Minister for Housing and Homelessness, Michael Sukkar, visited Groom earlier this year to hear directly from local stakeholders. His visit was instrumental in shaping the HIP policy by bringing forward practical solutions from the region.
“Michael’s visit to Toowoomba was instrumental in forming the HIP policy,” Mr Hamilton said.
“He listened to the challenges our community is facing regarding housing supply and infrastructure. That feedback is reflected in the Coalition’s approach,” Mr Hamilton said.
The Coalition’s policy will deliver a 500,000 home boost to housing supply by addressing the major impediment to new housing developments.
“While it’s not typically the role of the Federal Government to fund enabling infrastructure, the severity of the housing crisis demands action,” Mr Hamilton said.
“This $5 billion investment will unlock shovel-ready projects that are being stalled, and we are committed to making home ownership a reality again.”
This funding will be offered on a strict ‘use it or lose it’ basis, ensuring swift progress on successful projects.
Under the Albanese Government, Australia is facing a housing crisis. The great Australian dream of home ownership has never felt further out of reach.
