Our community deserves to feel safe and right now people do not, with youth crime out of control.
In the Toowoomba region, we have witnessed it, felt it and experienced it first hand.
The Federal Coalition has announced that we will seek to crack down on youth crime by making it illegal to post social media material that glamorises violence and criminal activity.
This idea came to fruition from local engagement with people on the ground, impacted by youth crime in our community of Groom.
The Coalition has taken this issue seriously and I have been unwavering in advocating for action.
It is incumbent on the Government to show some leadership and play its part in cracking down on this behaviour which glamorises violence and keeps the cycle of crime going.
This morning in Parliament, the Coalition are putting forward a proposal to deal with this scourge. We will:
- make it illegal to post social media material that glamorises violence and criminal activity
- prevent these criminals from using social media for up to two years, and
- provide the eSafety Commissioner with specific powers to take this social media material down
We will also provide the eSafety Commissioner with specific powers to require such videos and material to be taken down.
I want to thank Helen Bell, Sarah Orton, Jo Noble and Lee Faulkner for working alongside me at every step to achieve this.
It is time to get serious on young criminals who seek to highlight their criminal activity on social media.
Let’s make our community safe and deter young criminals from doing the wrong thing.
ENDS.
