The Australian Government has responded to the independent review of land uses around key Defence bases impacted by PFAS contamination including the Army Aviation Centre Oakey.
Federal Member for Groom, Garth Hamilton, said he would consider the government’s response in full, and while he was disappointed a Working Group was not setup in Oakey, he was cautiously optimistic.
“This was an important review for the people in Oakey, for Australians around defence bases everywhere and addressing the contamination impacts of PFAS.
“PFAS has caused social, economic and environmental harm and this review process is part of repairing the damage that has been done, and ensuring those communities have a brighter future ahead,” Mr Hamilton said.
Recommendation 19 specifically sought for the national coordinating body to setup working groups to prepare strategic business cases for the Oakey and Tindal precincts.
Mr Hamilton said it was disappointing that the government had opted to setup a working group in Williamtown, but not in Oakey which he said was a missed opportunity to move forward.
“This is a government that said it would govern for all Australians, and by my measure on this matter, this is an example of them not doing so, the communities in Oakey and around Tindal deserve the same respect as Williamtown.
“I urge the Albanese Labor Government to consider working with our local community in Oakey, with advocates such as Eric Donaldson to stand up a working group if locals wish to have one,” Mr Hamilton said.
The Government’s response accepted the implementation of a National Coordinating Body to improve management responses to PFAS.
“I thank Mr Jim Varghese AM for his work in undertaking this review, including meeting with myself, representatives from my office and our community to reflect local input,” Mr Hamilton said.
