A Dutton LNP Government will provide $100,000 from a revitalised Safer Communities Fund (SCF) for additional security for the Drayton & Toowoomba Cemetery.
Federal Member for Groom, Garth Hamilton said the upgrades would help deter vandalism, like those that occurred last year.
“The disgraceful acts of vandalism that occurred last year resulted in damage to memorials and monuments was despicable, and it caused great anguish in our community, but particularly for the impacted families,” Mr Hamilton said.
“Unfortunately, this sort of criminal behaviour is increasing, and we must do more to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour.
“A future Dutton LNP Government will partner with Toowoomba Regional Council and fund improved security, through CCTV at the Drayton & Toowoomba Cemetery.
“Getting Australia Back on Track means keeping families, businesses, and communities safe.”
The revitalised SCF will build on the programme established by the previous LNP Government, delivering grant funding to councils, schools, and local organisations to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour, enhance security around community spaces, and promote social cohesion.
Member of the Headstone Healing Project, Greg Johnson, welcomed the commitment.
“The Headstone Healing Project started back in August of 2024, following the senseless vandalism at the Drayton & Toowoomba Cemetery.
“Our group is made up of passionate community members who’ve stepped up and want to make a difference, to support grieving families and begin the work of restoration.
“The security of this beautiful place is a central issue for us – the Drayton and Toowoomba Cemetery holds generations of history dating back to the 19th century.”
“Having Garth visit and meet with the passionate people behind this project was incredibly encouraging. This commitment is a positive step forward, and we’re grateful for the support.”
